Norman,
My article on the last meeting will be in the next issue of the AVA. Sorry for the delay but it was a lot to sort through to determine what are the most relevant points to be made.
The short of it is that I gave the Board a letter concerning my being told by a Board member, Courtney, that I didn't have a right to volunteer. I pointed that the Board had made a decision without a vote and without getting my side of the conflict. The end result is that Madrigal got permission from the Pres. to put a discussion on the agenda about the Board policy regarding volunteers. I asked if the power to exclude be given to management & staff , that the boundaries be clearly defined to prevent the abuse of banning for having a different perspective.
I am beginning to notice a trend. The people who have been banned are all coastal progressives. Marco Maclean, Mitch Clogg, myself, you, Sister Yasmin. I was wondering if anyone from the inland community has also been banned on some pretext but are all independent thinkers rather than station cheerleaders.
I am encouraging a caravan of people who have experienced being culled from the airwaves to attend and participate in the next Board meeting.
The Board has instituted a second Public Comment to respond to agenda items and Board discussion. Progress is being made but slowly.

On February 7th KZYXtalk went "on air"
with the following post:
"Acknowledging that at least some people have something to say about
our public radio station, KZYX, and
being a proponent of the minority
voice and free speech I've launched
a new mcn.org list site:
kzyxtalk at lists.mcn.org
There is now a new way to express
y(our) views and hopefully it will
be followed by Board members,
staff and candidates.
Please join the discussion.
Norman"
(if you don't have the time to read this history
please drop down to the Conclusion)
on May 6th I received the following from the AVA
asking me for comment:
"Disturbing rumor: Anonymous sources at the meeting said that Norm de
Vall's Access show has been cancelled, as well as his highly respected
candidate interviews. These sources said that the action was taken because
de Vall is perceived as critical of management and that individuals with
such views are not allowed be programmers at KZYX or to host an interview
type program. What about that, Norman?"

I responded on the same date to the AVA with:

"Bruce,
First I have to make a correction re the ACCESS Program. I chose
to leave the regular programming format to do Special Editions of
The ACCESS Program beginning in July of 2012.
The following is in response to the "rumor".
After a brief meeting with Mary, I was told that
KZYX staff would conduct the (candidate) interviews; she
followed with (and this is almost a direct quote)
- anyone who criticizes the station or enables
others to do so won't have a microphone-.
I called again last week and again received
a -we've got it covered-.
So much for being a proponent of free-speech
and being a volunteer.
The real issue here was my launching kzyxtalk
enabling anyone to express themselves regarding
their radio station and programming while not being
able to do so on air.
What an irony……Having to go to the internet to
"talk" to say what you can't say on the radio."

It is my belief that the real contention here is that
KZYXtalk is an open forum without censorship.
But setting that aside I wrote to Mary and John,
with a cc to KZYXtalk on March 13 regarding
interviews and debates programming for the
June Primary Election as follows:

John,
To get new ideas as our political landscape changes.
And some of the suggestions received have merit.
So no matter who may do the interviews they can
be more informative than before.

In conclusion:
I will be making my contribution to KZYX
during this pledge drive and urge others
to do the same. In time we will see station
policies which will address much of the
discord which has lasted for years.
But station management and our Board
must be open to criticism.
KZYX has no need to be secretive.
KZYXtalk has and will continue to be
an open forum for discussion and
hopefully be beneficial to the station.
