[Kzyxtalk] In Case Anyone's Interested

This would be an interesting topic for a forum…a debate…with pro's and con's elucidated from the most practical, to the most fearful, to the most idealistic and sublime…all in the context of understanding and clarifying the stations' past decisions(in the context in which they were made) present challenges(and their context) and future choices and the context in which they are being considered.)

I, personally, think context is everything.

Thank you Beth for outlining this important topic. Perhaps we can identify other issues that could be treated in a forum…a series. That might help to bring the community together…i.e. all the people who care, pulling together to create a better, more relevant, more stable station…instead of pulling apart.

Not sure if anyone who is currently responsible for the day to day and vision/direction of the station has the time for such an expansive exploration…but perhaps some process could be developed to address these issues.

It would be great if these issues could be address within the positive context of creating proposals for funding, a variety of support/membership expansion/etc..

Without a positive context I really can't participate,

All the best,

Ann

Ann! The original intent of Underwriting at KZYX was to provide NON-COMMERCIAL subsidy to the programming.
It was never, ever meant to be a mechanism whereby the Underwriting UNDERLING had control over program content.

This is particularly pertinent to public affairs programmers who are interviewing by phone remote guests with information pertinent to the listeners interests, whose own schedules limit when in the hour they are available.
Deferring an Underwriting Message to accommodate a remote guest is not Negligence. It is exercising FLEXIBILITY, with intelligence and a flair for pacing.
Which is also true at times for Music programmers who take their Intros and subsequent pacing seriously.

Has no one at the station realized how officious the language of the Underwriting Policy is?
"All underwriting is to be read exactly as written and scheduled"
"Repeated negligence with respect to reading underwriting costs the station money and may be grounds for dismissal."

I think many of KZYX/Z's goodhearted Underwriters would be aghast to learn that their support of the station could be used as a ploy by the 'Business Developer' to get rid of a programmer for whom he had developed a dislike.
As was the case when David Steffen threatened to dismiss (and when did he acquire that power) John Sacowicz because he did not read an Underwriting message exactly as scheduled. --beth bosk

Procedure for airing underwriting:

 1. A programmer must check the program logs before his/her shift begins to see if underwriting is scheduled.

 2. All underwriting is to be read exactly as written and scheduled.

 3. Underwriting logs must be signed before a programmer's shift is over. Repeated negligence with respect to reading underwriting costs the station money and may be grounds for dismissal.

Give me a call, Doug. This thing with Norman and Mary breaks my heart. Norman is eminently qualified to interview candidates. Other interviewers on KZYX's candidates forum are wimpy, namby-pamby. They play slow-pitch softball with the candidates. They lob their questions. Meanwhile, Norman is tough, sharp, edgy, super-informed.

Also, you should know that David Steffen is also getting up in my face. I'll be filing a grievance against him.

GM John Coate posted on Facebook that there was no dismissal. He says, there is "not one speck of truth to any of this."

Norman, do you have a response?

Anyone?
