[Kzyxtalk] [MCN-Announce]- [MCN-Discussion]- What?

This just in. On Monday, May 12, at 12:17 p.m., Norman De Vall posted to the KZYXtalk listserv (kzyxtalk at lists.mcn.org). Mr. De Vall confirms the following: "After a brief meeting with Mary [KZYX Program Director, Mary Aigner], I was told that KZYX staff would conduct the (candidate) interviews; she followed with (and this is almost a direct quote) -- anyone who criticizes the station, or enables others to do so, won't have a microphone."

The question now is: Will KZYX General Manager, John Coate, terminate or otherwise discipline, Ms. Aigner? Will Ms. Aigner be allowed to prevent Norman De Vall, a highly respected, retired public servant, who also hosted a popular and long-running public affairs show on KZYX, from hosting the candidates debates on KZYX, as he has normally done for many years? Will be the abuse of a volunteer be tolerated at KZYX?

More to the point: Will censorship be tolerated at KZYX? Will the KZYX Board of Directors allow such a blatant violation of Mr. De Vall's right to free speech or freedom of association? Will the Board allow such an abuse of authority -- authority placed in Ms. Aigner, and her boss, Mr. Coate, by the station's 2,396 members. Will the public allow this abuse of authority?

Folks: Norman has responded on the discussion listserv.
For those of you who ritually renew your KZYX membership during
the Spring Drive and would miss that personal connection by phone
with the radio station,
I suggest a better strategy would be to make the call and explain to
the volunteer why you are reluctantly (if that is the case)
withholding your pledge this season.
Asking to talk to anyone of the staff would also be appropriate. At
the very least, insist that Norman's hosting of the pre-election
interviews be re-instated.
Mary Aigner and John Coate's treatment of former Supervisor
Norman deVall is as insane as it is outrageous, and detrimental to
the choices we have to make this Primary.
Please. Withhold your pledge this week. Let them know you are
withholding. If things improve you can always pledge in Fall and
not lose your opportunity to vote in the next KZYX board election.
Why let this go on and on and on. --beth bosk

It's a very long, sad story and I have work to do in the garden.

Just know that I responded to an open invitation issued ON THE AIR
by
DJ Blankfort to discuss the Israeli-Palestinian peace issue as a
supporter of the right of the existence of the State of Israel and
the
creation of a new Palestinian state, the two-state solution. Know,
too, that my offer to appear was accepted and publicity was
promulgated and disseminated both in print and on the air,
announcing
the forthcoming discussion and my debate with the, generally, anti-
Israeli stance of "Takes On The World." An hour before air-time the
newly appointed general manager called me to announce that, in the
name of "Good Radio" he was rescinding my invitation. Since then all

broadcasters have had to issue disclaimers that anything said on his

or her show was the sole responsibility and opinion of the speaker.
The lone arbiter of what MAY be broadcast is John Coate. I am no
longer waiting for his promised "future opportunity" to take issue
with his regularly broadcast programs that delight in pro-Arab
propaganda, distortions and lies against the State of Israel. And
while I expect a storm of protest to this note, never have I
received
ANY acknowledgement or recognition of the censoring of MY radio
appearance and MY opinions. Oh, no...that's not true. Norman called
John and asked why I was summarily dropped with no broadcast
explanation. All I got was a shrug and some mumbling about "Good
Radio." That said, I'll send in a couple 'a bucks to keep Dan
Roberts' shows on and allow the droning elevator sounds of the new
KZYX to continue performing its white noise. And that just out of
the
goodness of my heart. Did anyone hear any one of those dipsticks say

a single word about the fabulous performances the Mendocino Theater
Company has mounted of Carter Sears' direction of "Grace" now in its

final weeks? The papers liken the ensemble's tragic-comic timing to
chamber music.

Local radio, hmmpf!
