This is unfortunate, especially in light of the new Board 's perception
that KZYX needs more volunteers helping with the programming, not less.
What does it mean to be "critical" of a radio station whose governance is
democratic and whose mission statement requires acceptance of "all points
of view"?
We can speculate that setting up the list serve to perform a function
currently not allowed on the airwaves nor provided for on the stations own
web sight, is the reason for the dismissal.
As I recall, the only issue discussed by Norman so far on the list
serve has been the one about the contract that is supposed to be signed by
programmers with MCPB as stipulated in the Station Handbook. I believe
Norman's concern was that without this contract, programmers are legally
treated as employees of the station (though unpaid) rather than independant
contractors, and are subject to CA state liability requirements as a
result. I have wondered how this contract (or lack thereof) affects a
programmers ownership of his/her program including subsequent syndication
rights.
I believe Mary and Barry Vogel had a dispute about this when Barry was in
the process of syndicating "Radio Curious," which can be heard on KMUD as
well as KZYX. I do not know how Barry resolved the issue.
Is it possible that bringing this up qualifies as "criticism" of KZYX and
was the cause of the dismissal? It seems to me like something that needs
to be looked into, not a criticism of station policy.
My feeling has been that Norman has been a good moderator, remaining
neutral as the debate raged on.
I for one would like to hear Norman's voice back on the air, and hope that
the new board will be able to resolve this quickly as it now appears that
more bad press is coming out right in the middle of a pledge drive right
after the board let us know we will be losing up to $75k in public support
next fiscal year. The drama continues.
