From an offline discussion:

"I like Jane Futcher, and we seem to share some common ground, intellectually: So sweet, so smart, so middle class. But Patricia Kovner brings a working class perspective (and even more degrees) and a working knowledge of direct democracy, of which there is precious little on the board. Would that we could keep both voices. In fact, there was no one at that crowded little table with all the microphones and cables, not a one, even General Kisslinger, that I wouldn't invite back to discuss the future of KZYX, or to be a part of an Advisory Board, or whatever. The discussion was good."

Regarding the word "cranky." As the situationist say, every word has two meanings, one used by power, the other by the struggle against power. So the meaning of the word cranky is associated with those who speak out. And has either a pejorative and a positive sense depending on the context in which it is used. Or so I presume to think. kc

"One of my "offline" friends wrote to say that I should not have called Tim Bray a "cranky programmer." Well, I really didn't mean nothin by that. Cranky is good, isn't it? Anyway, Tim is an affable fellow." kc
