Subject: [Kzyxtalk] KZYX July 7 Board subjective report

The July KZYX Board-mostly subjective report.

(Photos at "Ken Collins" Ukiah on Facebook) To my left, sat another guy, also with gray hair but cut short. That turned out to be advisory board member Bob B, who drove to the meeting with his roommate Meg Courtney. To my left a knight's move away was Dave Hopmann. He's been there at all the meetings over the last year. He's surely part of the legal defense team to communication to the FCC. Also now identified as the person who eliminated the Mike Grady committees.

Sheila Tracy came with her tape recorder. The meeting was also recorded by John Coate. I asked him if I could listen explaining that I always discover a lot when I listen to a tape. I'll call him to see it that would be possible, for me to listen.

There was a report about the CAB meeting that was teleconferenced which I reported on elsewhere. As KZYXtalk knows, I was all excited about that, thinking it was an innovative idea because it seemed that the process was going to let the listeners, the public, participate like an open meeting… but you know it was done in such a way that the public couldn't see the reports being discussed, and we were given only 3 minutes and as usual, the official members did not respond to the questions raised.

John Coate reported that fund-raising and the latest pledge drive was weak, and not enough money was raised to do the proposed budget. There ensued a question about raising money expressly for the Ukiah studio, an idea Coate had rejected before. But guess what? The Ukiah Studio was scuttled for next year. And it in spite of all the reasons why the station needs to move (mostly the transmission problems) now he says he is considering raising the Philo mother station up another story or so, so that the signal might be able to clear the trees that block the signal.

Jane is planning a 25year birthday party, which prompted me in my 3 minutes to ask whether there would be any history, any report of the history of the station. I referred to my pamphlet and how no one had contradicted even one fact (Though without any proof, words like "slandering the station" (Mary) or "You are an A--hole." (Kisslinger) have been used. At that point, Paul Lambert interrupted me to tell me I lied about him and as Eliane pounded her little gavel, we exchanged epithets and I demanded proof. Then as the meeting resumed it's dull pace, he raised his hand to apologize to me. And I accepted, but I do wonder what he was talking about and why Kisslinger thinks I deserve the A-word.

While talking about history, I mentioned the Ukiah studio, and reminded her of the big meeting at City Hall in Ukiah December 2003 board meeting, when so many Ukiahans attended all supporting the studio, and how unfortunate it is that no effort has been made to raise money directly for the studio. That idea was dropped because it "ties the hands of management."

Coate said he removed the studio project from this years budget-plan (crossed out) because not enough money was raised in the last pledge drive. Big surprise. Instead the station is now considering raising the height of the Philo studio building. Whew. Great. No need to worry about changing the Anderson Valley epicenter of our so-called community station. Maybe after Mary retires.

My main point was that the discussion among the board was artificial, that their search for "outreach" was false. That the board could help the station through it's difficultly by engaging the dialog already in progress at KZYXtalk.

Sheila Tracy was justifiably upset that her agenda item about her exclusion, and that of other potential volunteers, was not on the agenda even though promised by the president of the board. Holly Madrigal provided some cautious support for Sheila's point. Sheila has said that she will take legal action if there is not some response by the next meeting.

John Sakowicz spoke of the spitting incident by a staff member, and there was much consternation that he mentioned it, even though he did not mention the name of the staff member.

Look for the objective report from Sheila in the AVA.

Regards to all. --king collins
