KZYXtalk folks,
Much emphasis is put on the finances and how they have been handled, and yet so little is known.
Thanks for your report, Doug (below).
The board has drawn emphatic conclusions about the financial situation and presented them as fact. And Jane Futcher in particular agrees with those conclusions.
That is a clear line, and nobody will dispute that.
Are these positive assessments true or are they propaganda? How are we to know?
If we are willing to take the time, and not draw premature judgements, perhaps we will be of some use to the members and listeners, and the board.
This kind of open forum is a good place to piece together the real picture. An ideal board would do that work for us, but the board refuses to be transparent about much of anything. (Does anyone disagree?)
Research needed. If anyone has the time to review the budget figures, or just collect all the budget figures for the years back to 2003 that would be great. I am working on an info-graphic that needs some of those numbers. I think a report of the relevant elements of the financial condition is very important, and the budget reports (all on the web site?) have most of the info we need, to which I would like to add the salaries of the staff.

I have been looking at the GM reports going back to 2008 in order to discern the evolution of the financial crisis. Near as I can tell, most of the 95k in debt was accrued in the fourth quarter of that year. 2009 was a terrible year, resulting in the 175k of debt we have become accustomed to hearing about.
Last year was a good year due in large part to 60k in unexpected CPB grant increases, though membership donations were higher than expected as well.
Underwriting is down from 100k in 2008 to about 40k, and KZYX does spend about 30k on programming...down from about 55k in earlier years (perhaps due to rural status with NPR).
I urge you all to take a look at the managers reports. Remember the fiscal year ends June 30 so the July reports contain yearly budget info.
