thanks, sheila- i appreciate your perspective and the education i am getting about how the station operates. i have been a daily listener and subscriber for 20 years and wondered how these awful decisions were made.
my attendance at board meetings was not worth the time i spent getting there.
my application to be on the program advisory council
(multiple pages, essay answers, which i spent a lot of energy completing)
was never acknowledged,
nor was there ever any announcement of who was chosen for that council.
nor was there any seeming influence by that "council"
if one was empaneled.
i once wrote a gentle note
to express my displeasure at losing local news
and i got a snarky, mean letter back.
it was followed by an apology the next day - but
i knew the GM was stressed out.
i feel like the station asks us for money all the time, but is not accountable for that money.
Restricts our input to narrow channels of communication defined by strict rules as to what and when things can be discussed.
AND I AM REALLY SICK OF those npr ads for the gas industry:
"THINK ABOUT IT" -how fracking has saved and served other small communities like ours...
kzyx needs rescue, not destruction....
let's fix it!
vote and change things- it's our station!

Karen,
The simplest answer is that, from John Coate's perspective, the stations news programs were one sided, leaning toward leftist philosophy.
Since he, along with Mary was making the programming decisions it didn't matter what any of the members or listeners thought. This is one of the main difficulties with the station--the lack of inclusion of the public base. It is also the main reason why 1/5 of KZYX membership numbers (423) now donate to KMUD while only 44 people in Humboldt County donate to KZYX. The station ignores these statistics by having more pledge drives to bolster its membership numbers and make it appear as if a boycott of the station by dissatisfied listeners is not occurring.
Of course, from where Coate stands on the extreme right, everything is left of his views.

He offers this fine program at no cost to broadcasting stations. We missed a remarkable interview with Vandana Shiva last week. Luckily we can still catch his program on KMUD.
