In this matter, as with other things, you are incorrect. 

 

Each staff member has specific responsibilities, and the responsibility of a
programmer is to learn her/his craft, function on a volunteer basis, and not
distract staff from their core responsibilities. You seem to suggest that
you are an elite programmer in a highly staffed broadcast facility here to
serve your every need. Ask your fellow programmers about their needs and/or
who "engineers" their program. Renewable Energy Hour, Consider This, Wildoak
Living, Takes On The World, Holistic Health Perspectives, Wondrous World of
Music, Hoo Doo Dance Party, French Touch, Ecology Hour, Pride Radio, Jazz
Odyssey, et al, seem to function just fine without engineering help from
staff. Learn your craft and contribute beyond what goes into the microphone.

 

As for arrogance, it's found throughout your condescending suggestion that
we should do your work. That is not how volunteer programmers operate at
public/community stations.

And that, my good man, is one of the few really essential reasons that
salaried staff is here for -- to help volunteers. It's my further opinion
that shows should be engineered by a staff member, if that's the volunteer
programmer's preference. And shows -- particularly public affairs shows --
should be archived, as they are at KQED, even KMUD.. It what salaried staff
does. Help volunteers. That help, and to keep equipment working and
upgraded. All else is secondary.

 

In your arrogance, please don't forget that fact.

 

Reading listservs and commenting on listservs, as you are doing now, is not
essential.

It's interesting how some people who have been programmers for four or five
years or more still cannot get themselves on the air without help from
staff. 

 

It's interesting how some people who have been programmers for four or five
years and still cannot get themselves on the air without help speak with
authority about how best to get a program from a studio to the listener.

 

It's interesting how some people who have been programmers for four or five
years or more still cannot get their archived programs onto the station's
website without help.

 

It's interesting how some people who have been programmers for four or five
years or more continue to reminisce about the good old days when they
broadcast a program via an internet hookup that worked so well; yet it
really didn't, since it had so much buffering and so many dropouts, it was
unlistenable. 

 

It's interesting that if you can't get yourself on the air, you have no
background in broadcast engineering, you cannot prepare a program for the
archive, and you cannot remember that the program they used to send via the
internet was of pitiful broadcast quality . . . it's interesting how anyone
like that can bloviate about anything.
