Hi Ali,
I've spoken with a couple of folks about the possibility of doing some speaking from Mendocino generally, but haven't asked anyone officially as I'm waiting to hear from the funder to make sure the tour is on. Depending on funding it's likely Id ask more than one to do certain states, otherwise it's too long a journey for any one person.
The CRN is formed the way they all have been in other states, we talked about it in Democracy school and on the tour I worked on. Among other things, I will help pull together a provisional board based on who is doing the work in the state and can work with others from other communities to advance the statewide strategy and goals they create. The process can be found on CELDFs website Eventually those folks will then vote on a whole new permanent CRN board. CELDF and Movement Rights provide a supportive role in the initial creation including the legal framework etc. and forwarding provisional members.
Mendocino will of course be represented by at least 1 delegate, possibly 2 depending on the size of the board overall.
This will hopefully happen after the tour. Generally it's preferred to have more than 2 communities with ordinances, but we think the tour can jumpstart the conversation statewide to Launch in California. We don't want to jump the gun, but it's moving forward.
I think the experience of having Mendocino speakers visiting and working directly with 3 other state CRNs will be hugely valuable in ensuring Mendocino is a leader in the statewide work and that the experiences of counterparts elsewhere will be instructive.
Great to hear about your gathering in MN and would love to know more about lessons learned in the consensus process!
Best,
Shannon

>> At the beginning of February, I went to Minneapolis, Minnesota to attend a formational gathering of a new national Community Rights support organization, inspired and pulled together by our friend, Paul Cienfuegos. There were 8 of us, on couches and chairs in a cozy living room of a 1913 Victorian home, for 3 full days, eating together, getting to know each other, brainstorming mission statements, various roles of people within the new organization, practicing consensus decision making (a great story here of how we decided how to decide... phew...even in a group of 8 wanting to work together the process was neither quick nor without tears!), talking about specific business models, money, and the unspoken privilege of organizations depending on volunteers (what ! allows someone to have the time to volunteer?).
>> At first I was hesitant to attend, not wanting to add more stress nor commitments to my plate, however, thanks to donations from members of the CRN group helped me lighten my financial burden, and the invitation from Paul C to participate in this creative and historic experience sounded like an opportunity I would feel silly to decline.

>> Come join a potluck, hear some stories from this gathering, and get together with folks to talk about next steps in Community Rights.
