[CRNMC] Next vital issue idea

We might be able to follow in the wake with another success which would strengthen our reputation further and continue to build more community support for the organization if we passed an ordinance that would have wide appeal.

An idea I had that should have wide appeal would be to adopt an ordinance that would require all new commercial development to provide rainwater catchment storage for at least a percentage of their landscaping needs. Costco got away without having to do this even though the idea was brought before the City Council for consideration.

Using treated water for landscaping not only is a drain on our limited supply but it takes fossil fuel energy to treat water which only exacerbates the drought/heat problem further. Rain water harvesting would help conserve both energy and potable water supplies and it would help off set the impacts of large asphalted parking areas. This seems like a no brainer to me and yet the county and city doesn't require it.

Tucson adopted the first ordinance which requires 50% of water for landscaping to be harvested. www.tucsonaz.gov/water/docs/rwhordsum.pdf
I believe Albuquerque, Santa Fe and others have followed suit.
Your thoughts on this idea?
