Brackets if used correctly have a very specific purpose:

They are usually used to make sense of a quoted sentence after a little editing or compression.

I use them for two main reasons: when I want to enclose parentheses within parentheses, and when I want to enclose comments, corrections, explanations, interpolations, notes, or translations that were not in the original text.
