Have you read my email? Did it get to you?
If not, please let me know BEFORE you send this press release out.
Here's what I sent - no one has acknowledged it:
> Even if the recent press release went out already, I have an important point I'd like to make for all future messaging. Shannon and I went round and round on this last week and I don't think she ever grokked my point, but I believe it is crucial.
>
> The phrase "local self government" is the idea that so many people go up on - Lilliquist in Bellingham, for one - Randi Coven for another and several of my very progressive friends, too. Too broad, too seemingly anarchistic... fears it will be used to take away black's or women's vote, etc etc.
>
> If you look at section 2 of the ordinance, b,c,and d all point specifically at fracking - protect our water, air and soil from pollution from fracking. In a, it's just a blanket statement. I didn't even use the term in the "Argument For" until Shannon and Ben insisted it must be in there. So I wrote it thus:
>
> Measure S establishes a Community Bill of Rights for the people of Mendocino County, built on the right to local community self governance, in order to exercise and secure our unalienable right to protect our health, safety and well being.
>
> We are claiming the right to local self government in order to secure our fundamental rights - not to give us the right to ignore any law or constitutional provision we simply don't like, or to take away someone else's rights. To me this is a crucial distinction.
>
> Unfortunately the ordinance does not make this distinction and to me, that is a major flaw in the ordinance. However, we could soften this by not repeating the mistake in our messaging to the public. Always say "we are claiming the right to local self government in order to secure our fundamental rights."
>
> Isn't that what we actually mean? It's what CELDF means, too, if you read their literature carefully. Isn't that what the ordinance should have said? I wouldn't ever make an issue of this in public, but remember to use the broader language whenever you speak of local self government.
>
> If y'all grok the importance of this point, great. If not, well, I've tried to make my case and I will let it go for now.
>
> Thanks for all your work on this committee!

>> The Community Rights Network of Mendocino County has placed an ordinance on the November ballot that asserts Mendocino County has the right to protect its water from fracking.
>>
>> The Community Rights Network gathered almost double the signatures needed to qualify for the ballot in just 35 days so voters can make the final decision in November. The Board of Supervisors voted to approve the measure for the ballot.

>> Measure S states that Mendocino County citizens have the right to safeguard the county's water both on and beneath the Earth's surface by banning fracking in Mendocino County. It says that Mendocino County citizens have the duty to ensure that local water is safeguarded by decisions made by local people.

>>
>> California and Mendocino County are both in emergency drought status and Measure S will protect our water from being used and polluted by the highly controversial natural gas extraction process known as fracking.
>>
>> Fracking places a toxic mix of largely unknown chemicals into the earth that has leaked into the water supply of many communities on the East Coast, Colorado and Texas.
>>
>> If Measure S passes, Mendocino County will join 170 other communities in the U.S. that have passed community rights ordinances against corporate harm to their ecosystems.
