[Community Rights Network] Education & Outreach Meeting Notes- 4/7/14-6pm

Education & Outreach Node - Conference Call 

April 7th, 2014 6:00pm-7:15pm
Phone attendees: Meg Courtney, Beth Brennanman, Michael St. John, Ali Boecker & Baile Oakes
1. Creating an Event Calendar
- Paper calendar provided by Carrie Durkee & others is helpful, but only includes legal components 

-Michael St. John offered to create anElectronic Calendar to share with the group.  He will contact Michael Dean (who has computer skills) to help.  This e-calendar will allow us (across the county)to edit, add, and work from the same calendar.

Including:
a.  Legal deadlines (Carrie's Calendar)

b.  Already Scheduled Events around Mendocino County we may want to Table -Including ONGOING events like Farmer's Markets/First Fridays/Sundays in the Park (ukiah) (Ali will start collecting these dates)
-Ali wants to have more FUN events- pairing Education/Outreach with Live music... will contact the Caspar Inn to see if we can do an education portion before their music shows.

c.  Events WE want to HOST
-Meg (fort bragg) & Michael (Mendocino) will host "Reclaiming Democracy" viewings at their homes.
-Beth notes that the movie is VERY long and most people would get bored in watching the whole thing. Suggestion: watch the portion with Thomas Linsay 
　2. Contacting Newspapers/ Radio Show hosts/ Partnering Organizations? for education & outreach
-Meg will contact Morgan Zietler to pursue him writing an article "birthing of an ordinance"- about Paul Cienfuegos' workshops, Democracy School and what led to writing this ordinance. 

-Meg will also contact radio show hosts: Tom Wodedzki, and Toni Reisel

-Dr. Marvin Trotter (a proponent) is interested in hosting more than one show related to healthy living/organic farming/ clean water & clean air & tying in this ordinance.  A second show could possibly be an expert on fracking, what happens to the water, health effects, and what this ordinance seeks to prohibit.   Ali will ask Shannon about a fracking expert/health expert and continue this conversation with Dr. Trotter.

-Meg will contact Fort Bragg City Council Member Doug Hammerstrom (who helped create the Corporate Rights timeline used by Paul C.) who is a member of ROTARY.  Asking if they would endorse/ support this ordinance.
　3. What are our NEEDS to move forward?
a. 1/2 or 1 page handout for tabling.
 Including:
-what is community rights?
-what is this initiative?
-why are we putting this on the ballot?
- in plain English AND SPANISH! 
- a couple endorsements? --- so far: MEC has partnered with us (Jane McCabe link)
**Baile and Michael St. John will start to work on this- with help from Meg's Elevator speech she currently uses to talk to folks about Community Rights.

    - Ali spoke with Shannon at 5pm, who forwarded three links (included at the end of this message) to share what other communities have done to educate and outreach to the public 

b. LOGO for CRN-MC 
-Meg will contact Rita Crane of Fort Bragg & Baile will contact another artist (who's name i missed... oops)- to see if they would help develop a logo for us. 

c. List of Partner Organizations for tabling
-Baile notes that it would be great to have a VERY LONG, VERY DIVERSE Partnering Organization list at each signature gathering table to show the WIDE support for this ordinance

d. Training for Public Speakers
- Related to the messenging Michael and Baile are starting to work on/ Meg's elevator speech- We need a 2 page (or so) document that can serve as a structure for people to attend various events to speak about Community Rights Work, and this ordinance. (coherent voice)
- Speakers can then practice and reach out at City Council Meetings, Organization meetings (ie-grange events, Rotary, or private organization events) with a voice that echo's what is being said by other members of CRN-MC around the county.
　4.  Paul Cienfuegos return for 3 hour lectures?/ town hall series?
a. Ali proposed (after hearing this from others not on the phone call) that it could be a good idea to invite Paul Cienfuegos back to do a series of his mini- lectures about Community Rights and tie in this ordinance.
b.  Meg notes that we may be "preaching to the choir", likes the idea, but how can we advertise to draw in people who don't know about this work already?
c.  It was decided Ali will contact Paul C. to ask about time avaiablity and costs related, and we do not have to confirm yet. 
d. Baile notes it would be good to have more publicity (ie-newspaper articles, radio programs, etc.) BEFORE brining Paul back to help spread the word and draw interest.
　5.  Cross-over of to do's/tasks between Education & Outreach, Media and Partner Cultivation
a. Ali will post the meeting notes to the list serv
b. Ali will contact Karina, Caitlin and Jane to set up a phone call to talk about how we will weave together what needs to be done, without stepping on toes, and create a cohesive voice to speak (messenging) to the wider community about this campaign/ordinance.
