Devreaux<br>
<br>
<br>
Spirit House<br>
<br>
There are no maps to guide us on this journey<br>
beyond the words<br>
trust in the earth<br>
<br>
At night in the Spirit House<br>
our ancestors gather around us<br>
I wear a bracelet of 54 prayer beads<br>
I whisper the prayers to greet our dead<br>
<br>
for the soul is a wanderer<br>
with many hands and feet<br>
<br>
I feel my heart open to the figure<br>
of a girl somewhere in the field of my past<br>
She carries my Grandmother's face<br>
hidden behind her eyes<br>
so in this way she completes a circle<br>
of all our people<br>
opening like wings on either side of her<br>
<br>
At night in the Spirit House they come with prayer shawls<br>
and beads to break bread with the living<br>
There are no guide posts for this kind of journey<br>
beyond opening ourselves to the power of the universe<br>
<br>
I sing the names of our dead<br>
count the prayers wrapped around my wrist<br>
watch the small circle of stars tremble a reflection<br>
of all our faces<br>
in the sacred circle<br>
floating just above our heads.<br>
