The chair needs committee members to take the lead<br clear="none">on programs, and not all who serve on the youth service committee do the same thing. I will<br clear="none">provide training for the four Rotarian leads below for 2023-2024. You are valued and respected<br clear="none">for any service commitment you can give. Did I say it is fun to see what is up with kids in our<br clear="none">area and witness the development of the next leaders? Our experience in Rotary is richer<br clear="none">because of the relationships we form, and having connections to schools and youth is never dull.<br clear="none">Here is the lineup of youth services, a brief summary of what the objectives are, and the<br clear="none">general steps involved.<br clear="none">I. <b>Dictionaries</b> - need a lead Rotarian (the youth services chair is not supposed to do<br clear="none">everything)<br clear="none">Objective: Promoting literacy and education is a long standing tradition of Rotary, and each<br clear="none">year we present a beautiful dictionary with a personalized bookplate to each third grade<br clear="none">student in Mendocino Unified School District. The kids are so excited to get these books. Not all<br clear="none">students come from homes with books in them.<br clear="none"><br clear="none"></div><div style="font-family:tahoma,sans-serif;font-size:small">Time commitment and steps involved:<br clear="none"> Email Mendocino school K8 office in early August to get students names and head<br clear="none">count.<br clear="none"> Email District dictionaries chair with number of dictionaries and bookplates needed<br clear="none">(place order).<br clear="none"> Email invoice from District chair to our treasurer for payment<br clear="none"> Arrange for pickup of dictionaries (Ukiah has drop site, generally)<br clear="none"> Personalize book plate (roughly 35-40 dictionaries)<br clear="none"> Contact K8 office to schedule date to present dictionaries. Invite Rotarians to present (3-<br clear="none">5 Rotarians - less for Albion and Comptche where we’ll have 1-2 students).<br clear="none"> Go to all three schools, Mendocino, Albion and Comptche to present dictionaries with a<br clear="none">small group of Rotarians (typically between November and January pre pandemic).<br clear="none"> Take photos and submit to local newspaper<br clear="none"><br clear="none"></div><div style="font-family:tahoma,sans-serif;font-size:small">II. <b>Interact Club</b> - need a lead Rotarian<br clear="none"><br clear="none"></div><div style="font-family:tahoma,sans-serif;font-size:small">Objective: This is a youth leadership development and service club. Ours is one of thousands<br clear="none">around the globe. Think of it as a junior Rotary Club. These students get skills by holding regular<br clear="none">meetings to plan service projects, by meeting other Interact club members in the district, going<br clear="none">to district leadership conference, and attending the week long Rotary Youth Leadership Camp<br clear="none">(RYLA) in June. We sponsor the club by paying a small Interact teacher- advisor stipend, send a<br clear="none">few incoming or potential club officers to RYLA camp, and sponsor other students to the<br clear="none">leadership conference. Interactors are invited to join us on service projects or invite us to<br clear="none">support theirs. The pandemic curtailed most activities and the club is working for meaningful<br clear="none">projects with outcomes.<br clear="none">Time commitment and steps involved:<br clear="none"> Email teacher advisor at Mendocino High early August to find out meeting dates.<br clear="none"> Attend student run meetings at the high school (currently 2x month, Thurs at noon,<br clear="none">about 20 minutes).<br clear="none"> Schedule students to attend 2 Rotary meetings, one in the fall and one in the spring.<br clear="none">They conduct the meeting. Rotarians sponsor a student or two (buy lunch) and get to<br clear="none">introduce students to our club after friendly interchange to learn what students are<br clear="none">interested in, or pursing after high school.<br clear="none"> Email Interact officer and teacher advisor with District notices and service projects with<br clear="none">our club<br clear="none"> Email with Rotary District with # students sending to RYLA<br clear="none"> Email club treasurer and have payment sent to District RYLA<br clear="none"> Take photos and submit stories to local newspaper of Interact and RYLA actions<br clear="none"><b>III. Scholarships</b> - need a lead Rotarian<br clear="none">Objective: Provide scholarships to two or more graduating students for college or trade school<br clear="none">education.<br clear="none">Time commitment and steps involved:<br clear="none"> Email Mendocino HS athletic director/ counselor with any changes for scholarship<br clear="none">application (sometimes no changes)<br clear="none"> Collect scholarship applications from high school office when notified by school (March<br clear="none">30 th , generally)<br clear="none"> Assemble scholarship review team from our club (5-7 Rotarians including lead Rotarian)<br clear="none"> Distribute scholarship applications to team, set schedule for review discussion and team<br clear="none">meetings, and select semi-finalists (could be Zoom or in person)<br clear="none"> Communicate with high school and arrange for interviews date (April)<br clear="none"> Interview finalists and select two (small panel of 2-3 Rotarians)<br clear="none"> Attend scholarship awards night, present award letter (May)<br clear="none"> Get student to send via email: headshot photo, brief summary of their plans, financial<br clear="none">aid office where award will be sent, and proof of enrollment (May- August emails)<br clear="none"> Email Rotary club treasurer with scholarship payment information<br clear="none"> Submit congrats scholarship award information to newspaper and media<br clear="none"><br clear="none"></div><div style="font-family:tahoma,sans-serif;font-size:small"><b>IV. Youth Study Abroad Exchange</b> – needs two Rotarians once up and running<br clear="none">Objective: Student study abroad experience. This is life changing for the students, host families<br clear="none">and communities. Students are goodwill ambassadors who increase cultural awareness, sowing<br clear="none">seeds of peace. This serves the outbound students of Mendocino and inbound foreign students<br clear="none">coming to Mendocino. The requirements are that it be equal sending and receiving, with host<br clear="none">families in both countries. The Rotary District facilitates and organizes study abroad exchanges<br clear="none">with approximately ten foreign countries. Mendocino used to host and send students for<br clear="none">decades and there is interest in resuming. Fort Bragg restarted their program this year. The<br clear="none">Bosma family is currently hosting a student from Germany. Our last student from Mendocino<br clear="none">went on the Fort Bragg exchange program as our program had folded due to shortage of host<br clear="none">families for inbound students.<br clear="none">Time commitment and steps involved:<br clear="none"> Serve as point of contact and liaison with Rotary District<br clear="none"> Serve as point of contact for students, parents, host families and high school<br clear="none"> Interview candidate students<br clear="none"> Attend trainings and get background checks for adults involved, including host families<br clear="none"> Line up potential host families for a few years out. Three host families have students<br clear="none">about 3 months during a school academic year. Good for students experience, and less<br clear="none">demanding for host families.<br clear="none">-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------<br clear="none"><b>In summary, we need 4 lead Rotarians</b> for the programs of our youth services, and we need<br clear="none">Rotarians to join in on the program activities. I am working full time, sometimes in Ukiah,<br clear="none">completing grad school and asking for your help. Having leads for Interact and scholarships are<br clear="none">our top needs.
