We met on the lawn at my house, and enjoyed pizza, made by Cafe Beaujolais, and salad and brownies, made by Karen as well as the sunny day and each other's company. We got the zoom going a little late, and on an I-phone, which was difficult to see in the bright sunlight, another lesson learned, but we hope those of you who tried to zoom in and may have been disappointed will join us next week, when we meet indoors for lunch at Mendocino Cafe.</div><div dir="ltr"><br clear="none"></div><div dir="ltr">Rotarians present were Susan, Matt, Brandt, Toby, Harold, Mike, Dean, John Cottle, Jeff and Scott. William and Roccie tried to zoom in but I am not sure if they got on or not. So we had a core group of 10 persons most of whom are mainstays of the club.</div><div dir="ltr"><br clear="none"></div><div dir="ltr">We discussed methods of addressing our membership problems, and it seemed to be that we needed to grow the club, by adding skills and backgrounds either to better represent our community better or to meet particular skill needs, more young people, and more women. We agreed we need to reach out to those who have left the club, or who have stopped attending meetings, figure out what went wrong, and get some of them back into the active club. We can do that by developing more social events, and developing our meetings in ways that are more fun. In some cases we had not mentored new members, and we needed to improve in that area. </div><div dir="ltr"><br clear="none"></div><div dir="ltr">Jeff suggested, and there was some support for, creating a new "friends of Rotary category of membership, for people who want to help out and stay in touch but do not want to pay the dues that full Rotarians pay. Another category could be corporate membership, which is being implemented in clubs in our district and nationwide. </div><div dir="ltr"><br clear="none"></div><div dir="ltr">We talked about the rituals that we have followed in the past, before the pandemic, which included for individual meetings things like the pledge, fines, happy dollars, a quiz, a thought for the day, a song, a who am I and a raffle. The consensus was that some of these may be out of date, but on the other hand some we should bring back, beginning next week. In the way of other events, we should bring back things like Charter Night, Debunking etc. </div><div dir="ltr"><br clear="none"></div><div dir="ltr">We talked about the importance for new members of linking up with other clubs and events in our district, including the District Training Assembly which is a good chance to learn current management techniques, find out more about Rotary and meet other Rotarians. Our club should encourage or even require new members to attend such events, and help with their expense. </div><div dir="ltr"><br clear="none"></div><div dir="ltr">Matt suggested a film depicting the new Rotary and the old Rotary, in a town setting. Also a Country Western dance party in the Park. Susan suggested that members put on dinner or cocktail parties.</div><div dir="ltr"><br clear="none"></div><div dir="ltr">We turned to the immediate future, and decided that, subject to the approval of the Foundation, we will hold a barbecue in the Park to celebrate the 4th of July. We need to discuss this at more length, and get going on organizing it, but there was also a thought that we could sponsor a country western or folk rock band. If anyone knows of one, please contact them to see if they are available. It occurred to me after the meeting that we could barbecue oysters as well as the usual hot dogs and hamburgers. Dean said we could use his barbecue. We will contact the Fire District to see if they would like to work with us on this. We might also talk with Fort Bragg Rotary. Jeff will take care of this, and we can discuss again next week. </div><div dir="ltr"><br clear="none"></div><div dir="ltr">We may wish to have something fun on the 4th in addition to a barbecue--a cornhole tournament, a bicycle race around the headlands? Should we seek to involve the Interact club?</div><div dir="ltr"><br clear="none"></div><div dir="ltr">Next possible event would be a golf tournament, a real one, as we have done in the past, not a pandemic tournament. Who knows the ropes and will step forward to organize it?</div><div dir="ltr"><br clear="none"></div><div dir="ltr">Jerry could not attend the meeting, but suggested we have dine out raffle as we did last fall, this fall. </div><div dir="ltr"><br clear="none"></div><div dir="ltr">There was agreement that we should have a debunking some time in June where the President hands out awards, and there was agreement from all that we will do it, date still to be decided. </div><div dir="ltr"><br clear="none"></div><div dir="ltr">Which brings us to next week's meeting, at Mendocino Cafe. Toby and I will bring our equipment and get us set up.
