Dear Gary,

This email is being sent to all Rotarians in District 5130, of which you are one.

For many years PolioPlus Chair for our District, Larry Myers, has been sending current Presidents a monthly Polio Newsletter, giving them updates on our progress towards a Polio free world.

I thought this month's newsletter is especially poignent and one that should be shared by every Rotarian in our District. It outlines the challenges facing us and our response to those challlenges. So I urge you to please take a few minutes from your busy day to read this.

Thanks,

Bob Rogers
PolioPlus Co-Chair

WHY is this happening in Pakistan? The increase is in the southern most regions of Khyber starting in early July. Those of you more senior Rotarians might remember that our outbreaks here in the US happened in our summer months – same as is happening in Pakistan. Monitoring has indicated that environmental samples increased positive samples in the region of outbreaks. That is normally an indicator of an increased # of under-immunized children.

However in late July, over 3 1/4 MILLION CHILDREN were immunized in those regions. Also 1.8 MILLION CHILDREN were immunized in 387 permanent transit centers thus vaccinating children on the move. We also know that prior to the outbreak in Pakistan that NID’s (National Immunization Days) were temporarily suspended due to a local disinformation campaign that led to violence.

Also remember the outbreak a few years ago in the Chad Lakes Region due to Boko Horam terrorism against the population in that area of Nigeria.

The second potentially serious lapse is in the Philippines. We have seen an outbreak of cVDPV2 (Circulating Vaccine Derived Polio Virus 2) along with positive environmental samples detected in sewer samples in a major city. This means that an increased number of children are under-immunized children. Some of you might remember that we sponsored immunizations in the Philippines as our first test way back in the 70’s. Mat Caparas, soon to be an R.I. President was the key note speaker at a District 513 Rotary Foundation fundraiser way back in 1984 which I chaired as the DG that year. He and Nita spoke to an audience of 400+ Rotarians including Friends of Rotary that night and with tears in their eyes they talked about their daughter who died at a young age of Bulbar Polio at the same time thanking Rotary for saving children’s lives by sponsoring an immunization campaigns to eradicate polio. There was not a dry eye in the audience that night.
