months. I do know that Kelseyville Sunrise has a major fundraiser each year in
the spring & I hope part of their proceeds will go towards saving children.
What about the rest of you???</font></b></div>
<div><b><font size="4"></font></b> </div>
<div><b><font size="4">So where are we today in terms the total eradication
of polio? Globally 6 cases YTD in 2019 (Afghanistan = 2, Pakistan = 4).
Personally it is disturbing to see the increase in cases in Pakistan however the
Global Commission for Certification of the Eradication convened a week ago
to discuss this very issue. Plus we continue to get significant financial
support from our global partners around the world and especially Muslin nations
who are continuing to strongly financially & personally support our
eradication efforts.</font></b></div>
<div><b><font size="4">I will keep up up to date on our ongoing efforts in
not only those countries but also Africa where we continue immunization
campaigns.</font></b></div>
<div><b><font size="4"></font></b> </div>
<div><b><font size="4">Personally I wanted to update you on my own
challenges. As I previously told you, I experienced a fall while visiting our
son & his family in Maryland which required surgery to reattach my right
quad tendon. The surgery was successful but required a 3 month re hab. of
aggressive physical therapy twice a week to strengthen my muscle loss not only
on the injured leg but on my polio challenged left leg.</font></b></div>
<div><b><font size="4"></font></b> </div>
<div><b><font size="4">I have talked at your clubs & conferences
about the challenges that polio survivors face each day as they age. My visits
to the Greater San Francisco Polio Survivors monthly meetings has brought this
into greater focus. The polio virus has destroyed many of their motor neurons
& weakened many others. However during the recovery state of polio- our body
does attempt to repair by building new attachments between the challenged &
damaged neurons – thus the recovery stage of polio where with proper treatment,
the polio survivor is able to return to a near normal life. However as the polio
survivor ages- those new branches are the first to deteriorate – thus over 50%
of survivors start their backward return to a state similar to the one they
experienced during the acute state of polio.</font></b></div>
<div><b><font size="4"></font></b> </div>
<div><b><font size="4">I like many other have been experiencing post polio
syndrome especially after my diagnoses of a non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma in 2009 –
weakness, pain, muscle loss on my left side. Well the physical therapy to rehab.
my injured right leg has challenged my left leg causing increased discomfort,
swelling & pain. Thus increasing my post polio syndrome. I hope you
understand I am not complaining to you – but attempting to explain the
challenges that polio survivors face each day as they age. Just think of a polio
survivor in a 3rd world country – who will never have the proper care
& will not fully recover & is aging. My guess that many die at a young
age. Fortunately those of us in the U.S. & other modern countries will have
continued support- those in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Nigeria & other African
Countries will not.</font></b></div>
<div><b><font size="4"></font></b> </div>
<div><b><font size="4">I will get off my soap box – you younger Rotarians
might not understand my terminology.</font></b></div>
<div><b><font size="4"></font></b> </div>
<div><b><font size="4">I just want you to know how proud I am of you, of
being a Rotarian of South Ukiah Rotary, and a member of District 5130. We care
& continue to make a difference in the local communities we serve, also
district wide & world wide.</font></b></div>
<div><b><font size="4"></font></b> </div>
<div><b><font size="4">Soon we will all celebrate that day when the polio
virus is totally eradicated & that morning a parent will awaken & know
that thanks to you their son or daughter will never fear waking up one morning
paralyzed.</font></b></div>
