Dear Gary,

I'm Bob Rogers, the District Governor-Elect (the guy behind Wulff) and I'm writing you to ask a favor. Our district is putting on a bike ride called Pedal 4 Polio next year, and it's purpose is to raise awareness and funds for our fight against polio. The ride is a 6 day ride, from one end of our District (Crescent City) to the other (Petaluma). Although it will be occurring in the next Rotary year (August 13-19), we need to start promoting and planning for this event now...thus the reason for this email. I'm cc'ing your President Elects, who are familiar with what we're doing, but I'm writing you to ask if you would read the below letter to your members during one of your next meetings as a way to "kick off" the promotion, as well as recruit volunteers and a "contact" from your club that we can co-ordinate with for this event. I'm also attaching a pdf of the bike ride logo to display during the read. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me, or your PE. More details will be coming shortly as we work out the details. On behalf of the Pedal 4 Polio Team, thank you for what you do to help in our fight against polio.

Yours in Rotary Service,

Bob Rogers
DG 2017-18
District 5130

Greetings fellow Rotarians,

As a polio survivor, one of my top areas of focus next year will be to continue working to raise awareness of Polio and to help eradicate it from the face of the earth.

Many of you were not around during the 40’s and 50’s when year after year tens of thousands of US residents, and half a million worldwide (mostly children) contracted polio and were crippled or died. With the development of the Salk vaccine in 1955, the spread of Polio dropped dramatically in the US with the last "native" case occurring in 1979 - nearly forty years ago, but globally this disease continued to injure and kill thousands every year. Rotary, with the help of The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, WHO, Unicef and the CDC, is finally closing in on victory over this disease

We are so near to finally realizing our dream of a world without Polio!

In District 5130 we are holding a bicycle ride from Crescent City to Petaluma, called Pedal 4 Polio, to raise awareness of, and to raise money for the final push to crush polio.

Our plan is to meet up on Sunday, August 13th in Crescent City, have dinner and spend the night with local Rotarians, then start riding south the next morning. We will ride for six days, finishing in Petaluma on Saturday, August 19th with a giant party, celebration and media event, announcing how much we have raised, and spreading the word about ending Polio. Average distance each day will be about 55 miles.

How can we help (you ask)?

Sign up to ride with us from Crescent City to Petaluma and obtain pledges from friends, family, colleagues and fellow Rotarians.

Sign up to ride for just one or two of the days (or even just through your town).

If you are not riding, pledge to sponsor one of the riders.

Provide logistical support for riders along the route (meals, housing, etc.)

Promote the event to your local media outlets and on your social media links

More details will follow soon. Meanwhile, I’m asking each club to please send me the name of one person from your club that will act as the coordinator for all activities associated with this event, including getting participants, support volunteers, and pledges. Within your club you may want to subdivide these tasks, but we would like just one Rotarian per club to coordinate with the P4P team.

Our goal is to have 100% participation from every Rotarian in District 5130 in some manner. If all 2,400 Rotarians in District 5130 pledged $35.00 (representing just $0.10 per mile - remember the March of Dimes?) to sponsor one of the riders, we would raise $84,000 for Polio Plus. And when you add the 2 for 1 match of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, that number increases to over a quarter of a million dollars…$252,000 to be exact. At 60 cents per vaccination, that represents inoculations for 428,000 children…that is, as RI President Elect Ian Risely’s theme says, “Making a Difference”.

Thank you in advance for your support.

Bob Rogers
