my expectations. I am deeply humbled by their commitment to saving children’s
lives and eradicating the potentially deadly polio virus from our
planet.</font></b></div>

<div><b><font size="4">Those clubs are RANCHO COTATI = $406 PER MEMBER,

<div><b><font size="4"></font></b> </div>
<div><b><font size="4">I know a number of clubs are in the process of major
fundraisers or finishing up fundraisers for polio eradication. Those clubs
include but not limited to Fortuna Sunrise, Garberville, Healdsburg,
Sonoma Valley, & Valley of the Moon. LET ME KNOW IF I CAN ADD YOU TO THE
LIST.......</font></b></div>
<div><b><font size="4"></font></b> </div>
<div><b><font size="4"><i><u>My hopes are that the few clubs that are at
zero or minimal contributions will also come through this year with
contributions to end polio. Traditionally each year our district goal is that
100% of our clubs will contribute to this life changing/life saving
program</u></i>. WE HAVE A WAYS TO GO TO REACH THAT
GOAL.....</font></b></div>
<div><b><font size="4"></font></b> </div>
<div><b><font size="4">Occasionally I hear – Larry when will this be over?
Hopefully the following will be helpful to your members.</font></b></div>
<div><b><font size="4">Since January 1, 2017 – globally only 5 cases
(AFGHANISTAN = 3 – Feb 20 most recent case, PAKISTAN 2 – Feb 12 most recent
case). Nigeria continues to be polio free since Aug 20,
2016.</font></b></div>
<div><b><font size="4"></font></b> </div>
<div><b><font size="4">You and I know if we stop immunizations without
finishing our commitment – epidemics will return world wide within a few short
years – and children and young adult will again be infected and will be crippled
or will die. THE POLIO VIRUS REMAINS A PLANE RIDE AWAY FROM THE UNITED
STATES.</font></b></div>
<div><b><font size="4"></font></b> </div>
<div><b><font size="4">So how are we to successfully complete our goal of the
total eradication of the deadly polio virus from our planet? Starting the first
week of April, Rotary and our Global Partners will be initiating a synchronized
vaccination program to immunize over 116 MILLION CHILDREN in 13 West and Central
African countries using more than 190,000 polio vaccinators to eliminate the
last remaining stronghold of polio on the African Continent. All children under
the age of 5 will be immunized in BENIN, CAMEROON, CENTRAL AFRICAN REPUBLIC,
CHAD, COTE d’IVOIRE, DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF CONGO, GUINEA, LIBERIA, MALI,
MAURITANIA, NIGER, NIGERIA & SIERRA LEONE. Volunteers will deliver
sufficient quantities of bivalent polio vaccine to every house across all
cities, towns and villages of the 13 countries. This army of volunteers and
health workers will work up to 12 hours per day. This will insure that children
crossing borders for any reason are identified and immunized. It also
allows health teams to cross borders and immunize children in pockets of
territory otherwise isolated by rivers or mountains, or on islands that may be
less accessible from the other side.</font></b></div>
<div> </div>
<div><b><font size="4">This approach was first used between countries of
eastern Europe and also in central Asia, in a successful campaign called
“</font></b> <b><font size="4">Operation
MECACAR”.</font></b></div>
<div><b><font size="4"></font></b> </div>
<div><b><font size="4">Two months ago I mentioned in my email that we has
just completed a successful campaign in India, immunizing 172 MILLION CHILDREN.
As you know India has been polio free for the past 6 years however immunizations
must continue until the polio virus is 100% eliminated.</font></b></div>
<div><b><font size="4"></font></b> </div>
<div><b><font size="4">Today, every new case of polio just might be the last
case ever on the face of our planet. However our planet can’t be declared polio
free until we see at least 2 years of zero cases along with zero environmental
samples.</font></b></div>
<div><b><font size="4"></font></b> </div>
<div><b><font size="4">So immunizations must continue and that takes money.
The Gates Foundation (Bill & Melinda Gates) have consistently stated that
they are in this battle until the virus is eliminated. Again this year, every $1
you contribute becomes $ 3 thanks to 2 for 1 match by the Gates. No other
program in Rotary can claim that distinction – ONLY FUNDS CONTRIBUTED TO POLIO
PLUS are matched in this way.</font></b></div>
<div><b><font size="4"></font></b> </div>
<div><b><font size="4">I urge each of you to review your fundraising goals
for your year of service and continue to work to meet and possibly exceed those
goals. Every dollar has the potential to save a child’s
life.</font></b></div>
<div><b><font size="4"></font></b> </div>
<div><b><font size="4">Thank you for your support – some of you have been
here since our start in 1988 – you have made a difference – saving children’s
lives – changing children’s lives.</font></b></div><span class="HOEnZb"><font color="#888888">
