<div><b><font size="4">DISTRICT 5130 PRESIDENT,</font></b></div>
<div><b><font size="4"></font></b> </div>
<div><font size="4"><b>I’m a little slow this month sending out my January
update for polio eradication. I have been quite busy since New Years. I have
made 2 separate trips to Humboldt County speaking at 6 clubs – Eureka, Old
Town, Ferndale, Garberville, Fortuna & Fortuna Sunrise. I really enjoyed the
visits & want to thank P.D.G. Erin Dunn for making all the arrangements.
Yes, Rotary is alive and well in the North of our district & I really
appreciate the support you have given our POLIO PLUS campaign. And yes, it is
getting little more difficult for me due to increasing neuropathy caused by both
post polio syndrome and my cancer. Early February will find me again visiting
Sonoma County – specifically Valley of the Moon, East Santa Rosa, Healdsburg
Sunrise & Healdsburg – between physician appointments.

<div><b><font size="4"></font></b> </div>
<div><b><font size="4">Attached is the latest polio eradication fundraising
update for 5130 a/o Jan 26. Total polio contributions since July 1, 2016 total $
119,498.38. Twenty Seven clubs have contributed over $ 1000. We still have a few
clubs with Zero contributions but I need to point out that clubs such as
Healdsburg have a YEARLY major fundraiser for polio on St. Patrick’s Day,
Valley of Moon also has their annual fundraiser for polio scheduled, Fortuna
Sunrise completed one of their many fundraisers for polio this last month. I am
waiting to hear from Clearlake, Ferndale, Lakeport. Our goal this year and every
year is 100% participation in ending polio. I know we will again meet this
goal.</font></b></div>
<div><b><font size="4"></font></b> </div>
<div><b><font size="4">Our leading clubs are: Sebastopol = $ 27,305, Rancho
Cotati = $ 10,804, Sebastopol Sunrise = $ 7567, Santa Rosa Sunrise = $ 7144,
Crescent City = $ 6109, Calistoga = $ 5690, Petaluma Valley = $ 4075, Arcata
Sunrise = $ 4000, Del Notre Sunrise = $ 3455, Mad River = $ 3300, Healdsburg
Sunrise = $ 2970, Kelseyville Sunrise = $ 2906, Gualala = $ 2900, South Ukiah =
$ 2800, Rohnert Park-Cotati = $ 2774, Windsor = $ 2593, Fort Bragg = $ 2545,
Cloverdale = $ 1940, Southwest Eureka = $ 1670, Santa Rosa = $ 1536, Fortuna =
$1505, Napa Sunrise = $ 1486, Sonoma Valley = $ 1430, Eureka = $ 1340,
Garberville = $ 1287, Ukiah = $ 1220, Petaluma Sunrise = $ 1141.

<div><b><font size="4"><b><font>There were substantial

<div><b><font size="4"></font></b> </div>
<div><b><font size="4">Remember that our $ 119,498.38 becomes $ 358,495
thanks to the Gates 2 for 1 contribution. This is the only Rotary Foundation
Program that benefits directly from the Gates 2 for 1
matching.</font></b></div>
<div><b><font size="4"></font></b> </div>
<div><b><font size="4">So where are we today in terms of reaching our goal of
the total elimination of the polio virus? As you already know, 37 cases of
paralytic polio last year in 3 endemic countries compared to over 350,000 cases
in 1988. The August 2016 outbreak in Borno North Eastern Nigeria remains at 4
cases. And yes we continue to immunize children in the area controlled by the
terrorist group Boko Haram along with immunizations in 9 adjacent
countries.</font></b></div>
<div><b><font size="4">Afghanistan had 13 cases in 2016 & we now know of
1 case in early 2017. Today the polio virus if confined to small areas in the
southern, eastern & south-eastern parts of the county. We know this to be
factual because of environmental sampling & genetic sequencing of those
samples. Bermal District had more than 50% of the cases in
2016.</font></b></div>
<div><b><font size="4">Pakistan had the remaining 20 cases & we now know
of 1 case in early 2017.</font></b></div>
<div> </div>
<div><b><font size="4">Rotary and our Global Partners continue to target
those areas with increased emphasis on eliminating the cross border transmission
of the virus from Pakistan into Afghanistan through the common entry points from
southern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP)/ Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) in
Pakistan to south-eastern Afghanistan in Paktika, Paktya and Khost provinces.
Nangarhar is another common cross entry point. </font></b></div>
<div><b><font size="4"></font></b> </div>
<div><b><font size="4">Today we are at a point that every new case of
paralysis just might be the last case ever on this planet. We are that close to
total eradication of the polio virus.</font></b></div>
<div><b><font size="4"></font></b> </div>
<div><b><font size="4">You are a couple of days away from completing your 7th
month as CLUB PRESIDENT or Rotary Foundation/Polio Eradication Chair for your
club. </font></b></div>
<div><b><font size="4">Take a look at your club goals for 2016/17 &
especially your polio fundraising goals. Every dollar raised for ending polio
has the potential for saving a child’s life and the Gates contributions makes
that 3 lives for every $ 1 we raise.</font></b></div>

<div><b><font size="4">WHAT A TREMENDOUS RETURN ON

<div><b><font size="4"></font></b> </div>
