<div><strong><font size="4">DISTRICT 5130 PRESIDENT,</font></strong></div>
<div><strong><font size="4"></font></strong> </div>
<div><strong><font size="4">Today I am attaching your first monthly financial
report on POLIO ERADICATION FUNDRAISING starting 7.1.16. It details each of our
clubs and your contributions to ending polio. It also details last years
individual contributions. As you can see $15,606 has been received for POLIO
PLUS since July 1. Sebastopol, Kelseyville Sunrise (21 members), Healdsburg
Sunrise, Windsor, Arcata, Mad River, and Santa Rosa Sunrise have been credited
with early substantial contributions. Thank you for your continued support for
this life saving/life changing program. Please review the printout with your
Rotary Foundation/Polio Eradication Chair for any errors or
omissions.</font></strong></div>
<div><strong><font size="4"></font></strong> </div>
<div><strong><font size="4">Each month I have discussed our progress towards the
total elimination of the polio virus and how close we are to that goal we
started working towards in 1985. Many you are not aware that our progress has
not always been on a straight line. There have been setbacks on a regular basis
but each time Rotary, Rotarians and our global partners have worked together to
overcome those obstacles. Today we are again facing a potentially serious
problem – TWO CASES OF PARALYTIC POLIO HAVE BEEN CONFIRMED IN TWO LOCAL
GOVERNMENT AREAS OF BORNO & GWOZA – NIGERIA. These are the first confirmed
cases of AFP (acute flaccid paralysis) and are genetically closely linked to the
polio virus last detected in Borno in 2011. As you know these are the first
cases in Nigeria since July 2014. </font></strong></div>
<div> </div>
<div><strong><font size="4">I mentioned previous setbacks – we have seen previous
outbreaks in areas such as the Middle East, China, Russia, India – all areas
once declared polio free. Each time Rotary along with our Global Partners have
been able to stop the outbreak and again declare those areas polio free. We did
this by aggressive immunization programs. We know that we must have a minimum of
80% of children under the age of 5 immunized to prevent outbreaks. We also know
that a couple of counties in Northern California have less than 80% of children
under the age of 5 immunized against infectious diseases including polio.
</font></strong></div>
<div><strong><font size="4"></font></strong> </div>
<div><strong><font size="4">So how can this be quickly resolved – aggressive
immunization programs not only at the point of the outbreak but also in
surrounding countries. Today Rotary, our Global Partners, the Nigerian
Government and the Islamic Advisory Group for Polio Eradication are working
together to play a crucial role in addressing the needs of trust building,
reliable information regarding the safety of vaccines, and dealing with
accessibility issues in reaching every last child in immunization campaigns in
several Muslin countries. </font></strong></div>
<div><strong><font size="4"></font></strong> </div>
<div><strong><font size="4">Besides Rotary funding continued immunizations, the
Islamic Development Bank in Saudi Arabia, the Gates Foundation, USAID, and
partners around the world are working together to fund an immediate emergency
outbreak response not only in Nigeria but surrounding countries of Chad,
Cameroon, Niger, Central African Republic. These will complement our
immunization efforts in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Lao, Madagascar, Myanmar and West
Africa including Guinea, Liberia, Sierra Leona, Benin, Mali and
Mauritania.</font></strong></div>
<div><strong><font size="4"></font></strong> </div>
<div><strong><font size="4">Let me remind you of India. About 7 years ago we
thought we were within a year or 2 of declaring India polio free but an outbreak
dramatically increased cases over the next year. We and our Global Partners were
able to reverse and neutralize the outbreak and today India has been polio free
for the last 5 years. I am confident that this will take place in Nigeria and
soon we will be able to declare the African Continent polio
free.</font></strong></div>
<div><strong><font size="4"></font></strong> </div>
<div><strong><font size="4">This can only be done with your continues
contributions and support. Today YTD 23 cases globally, 2015 YTD 74 cases, 1988
over 350,000 cases of paralytic polio.</font></strong></div>
<div><strong><font size="4"></font></strong> </div>
<div><strong><font size="4">Yes, we are making a difference to children and
parents around the world. Soon there will be a day that a parent will never have
to fear their child waking up one morning paralyzed with little of no hope of
every leading a near normal life. I will never forget that morning – but
fortunately I was in Southern California and received immediate treatment and
rehab that enabled me to walk out of that last hospital after 1 year of
treatment.</font></strong></div>
<div><strong><font size="4">Children in third countries will not have that
support.</font></strong></div>
<div><strong><font size="4"></font></strong> </div>
<div><strong><font size="4">Thank you for all you do locally to help those less
fortunate and internationally to help children around the
world.</font></strong></div>
<div><strong><font size="4">O</font></strong></div>
<div><strong><font size="4">Also please remember our speakers program. Bob Rogers
has informed me we have requests from only 2 clubs since July 1, Gualala and
Petaluma Valley. Last year we spoke at almost 2/3rds of our clubs plus
presentations at special District and club events. Our goal this year is to
reach those clubs we did not speak at last year so please contact myself or Bob
Rogers to schedule a program. I would like to schedule a couple of clubs in an
area to make my trips a little more efficient so keep that in mind and consider
working with another club in your area in terms of scheduling
presentations.</font></strong></div>
