We imagine the beginning of a festive annual tradition that would
offer locals and visitors a relaxed, festive time to shop and stroll.

Here at the bookshop, we started an annual Holiday Shopping Night seven
years ago. The first year was … quiet. But it's grown into something
that's anticipated by our regulars and fun for us, too. We do some
entertainment and a sale, but we're not suggesting that anybody else need
do more than stay open until 7 or 8 and perhaps offer some festive
refreshments. Nothing too ambitious is necessary!

There are enough shops already on board to publicize this. It's been
listed on the Shop-Local mailing that went out recently; there will be an
ad in next week's Beacon and Advocate-News; and we'll post notices to the
local announcement listserv.

We've prepared a poster that you can customize for your shop (attached)
and we're posting a generic version around town, which just reads “Contact
your favorite shops to find out who's participating.” If you choose to
participate, we'd encourage you to promote it via social media and any
other channels you use.

We hope you'll help get the ball rolling this year, and that we can build
the tradition in years to come. Maybe next year we'll be prepared far
enough in advance to distribute sidewalk luminarias so that Mendocino can
emulate Pleasonton's “Shop By Candlelight” event. How cool does that
sound?

Thanks for your time, and happy holidays!

Christie Olson Day, Owner

Sichelle Worley, Events Coordinator
