But I have no doubt that they have put me here to prevent me from being with my larger family: the Brazilian people. This is what distresses me the most, because I know that outside, every day, more and more families are back to living in the streets, abandoned by the State that should protect them.” </em>Lula Ignacio Da Silva</p>
<p>These are the words the former President of Brazil delivered in a message from his prison in the southern city of Curitiba.</p>
<p>Lula is a political prisoner, serving a 12 year sentence. Prisoners in Curitiba normally get two hours a day outside of their cells, they can see relatives or close friends once a week and they can ask to see their lawyers any time.</p>

<p>We have 500 postcards to send to Lula in prison. You can personalise your message and add your name, union and country to show Lula the world is watching and we will not give up on hope or a better and more just world.</p>
<p>The postcards will be printed and mailed to the prison in Curitiba.</p>
<p>A few weeks ago I went to visit Lula in prison, I witnessed the isolation he is forced into and the attempts to silence his voice. He told me, I am standing for President of Brazil because our democracy is in crisis and our people don’t need to live in poverty without jobs and social protection.</p>

<p>Lula is Brazil’s most popular politician by a huge margin, and the judicial persecution of him is aimed at stopping him becoming President again.</p>
<p><strong>This is a threat to democracy itself.</strong></p>
<p>The international trade union movement stands in solidarity with our Brazilian colleagues and the quest to defend democracy and reinstate the rule of law.</p>
