</div></div><p class="">The Trump administration’s “temporary” prison camp for unaccompanied
migrant kids and some migrant kids kidnapped from their parents at the
border isn’t just going to continue through the end of the year, it’s
going to get even bigger. Officials are seeking to increase the capacity
of the Tornillo, Texas prison camp by the thousands, from a reported
400 beds earlier this summer, to 3,800 beds.</p><p class="">“These temporary beds will be brought online incrementally as needed,” <a href="https://www.texastribune.org/2018/09/11/federal-government-greatly-expand-tornillo-shelter-unaccompanied-minor/" target="_blank" class="">claimed</a>
a Health and Human Services (HHS) spokesperson. “We will continue to
assess the need for this temporary shelter at Tornillo Land Port of
Entry in Tornillo, Texas, based on the projected need for beds and
current capacity of the program.” Except, the government has always
called this prison camp “temporary” because they think it doesn’t make
it sound as bad.</p><p class="">In reality, the Trump administration’s wish has always been to detain migrant kids indefinitely—<a href="https://www.dailykos.com/stories/2018/9/6/1793759/-Trump-admin-seeking-to-eviscerate-standards-protecting-migrant-kids-under-U-S-custody" target="_blank" class="">just look at the new proposal</a> seeking to eviscerate standards protecting migrant kids under U.S. custody, and as <em class="">The Texas Tribune</em>
reports, “the decision marks the third time the facility's operations
have been extended since it opened in June.” And as officials seek to
detain more kids and for longer periods of time, they’re also making it
harder for kids to get out of these jails.</p><p class="">Migrants kids can be released to relatives already in the U.S.
or other sponsors, but “immigrant rights groups have asserted all year,”
<em class="">The Texas Tribune</em> continued, “that the administration has
created unnecessary barriers for families or sponsors willing to take in
the unaccompanied minors. After the family separation crisis, critics
complained that some families were made to undergo more vetting than
others.”</p><p class="">The administration currently has nearly 13,000 migrant
children under HHS custody, the vast majority kids who came to the U.S.
on their own and seeking refuge. More than 400 are children who continue
to remain separated from their parents in blatant violation of a
judge’s order. All are at risk of ongoing emotional and physical trauma,
and for many, <a href="https://www.dailykos.com/stories/2018/9/11/1795012/-One-kidnapped-migrant-child-languished-in-a-Chicago-facility-for-over-a-year-documents-reveal" target="_blank" title="" class="">the damage has already been life-altering</a>, with distraught children forcibly medicated under custody.</p><p class="">Child detention is child abuse, and it’s on the hands of every
complicit legislator and administration official doing nothing to
protect these kids, especially those who are under court order to do
so. “This administration has resorted to putting kids in tents rather
than pushing for comprehensive immigration reform while Congress sits
complicit with inaction," said state Rep. César Blanco.</p>

something very wrong and evil going on with this administration. From
these camps for illegally detaining children (or whoever they decide to
put in them) , moving FEMA emergency response funds to fund ICE
operations, all the attacks on social programs and those that advocate
for them and the common good, pushing through an obviously
unqualified choice for the Supreme Court that will protect and do the
bidding of the White House, the list goes on and on and on. Do any of
you honestly believe that what we are watching unfold on the East Coast
isn’t really just murder in slow motion? The Administration will provide
little to no help for the storm victims. They-don’t-effing-care. Let’s
also not forget that there is a highly trained Russian, who hates us and
what we stand for, whispering in Donnie’s ear. Giving him advice and
orders. Most of the Republican Party is complicit in these
atrocities. I am barely surprised anymore by what goes on. It all seems
like a puzzle to which they keep adding pieces. All I can say is
thank god for Rachel Maddow and others like her. They are the only
reason I can keep up with it all and keep it all in perspective. We all
need to <strong class="">pay attention</strong> and <strong class="">get involved</strong>
before we find ourselves unable to get out of the traps it seems they
are building. if nothing else, make damned sure you let your Congress
Critters know how you feel and then get out and vote. Help people to
vote, if you can. It may be our last chance. </p>

single person involved with this maladministration being made to pay —
& pay hard — for their part in what the Republicans are doing to the
country. But after reading <em class="">this</em> diary, I realized that <strong class="">they all need to be made aware NOW that they’re operating on borrowed time & are going to pay</strong>. <em class="">All </em>the
people involved in every aspect of this — not just the people at the
top of the Republican food chain, but ALL of them, from every ICE agent
to the people working inside these “facilities” — need to be made very
aware that when the Democrats take power, retribution is going to be
swift & thorough & it’s going to go from top to the very
bottom-. People need to think about the actions they take today in terms
of what’s going to happen to them when they no longer have the cover of
a Trumpian government to hide behind & that the future will judge
them on how they behaved today. </p>

indifference to issues of Due process, liberty and privacy as it relates
to the rights of children and parents. You cannot cherry pick human
rights. As long as you continue to support a system that is keeping
nearly half a million kids apart from their familes every day, it should
come as no surprise that such a system can easily swell to gobble up a
few immigrant kids. The solution is to reaffirm the rights of children
to remain with kith and kin even if for some reason they cannot remain
with a parent. Until we acknowledge this basic human right of children,
all children will remain vulnerable to such self serving exploitation.
The foster care system is a racket no less exploitative than charter
schools - using children as IOUs to shift federal dollars into private
pockets. Put the focus back on building families not destroying them.
Everything that has been said about the deep and irreparable harm
being done to children by separating children from their families and
fostering them to strangers is true and has been confirmed by research.
Immigrant family separation is just the wee tip of a massive iceberg
mostly composed of the forcible separation of citizen families. When
people continue to ignore and dismiss this much larger issue, the
hypocrisy is too great to be ignored. The excitement is over a way to
attack Trump and was never about the horrific trauma to the children.
It is just another group of people using children's pain for their own
ends. And that is exactly why it happens. No one really cares about
any of these kids except for what tbey can get out of it, whether it is
to attack Trump or get their greedy paws on some federal funds or punish
a minority for not being White enough. Until I see someone stand up
for the overarching principle that children belong with their families,
immigrant or not, I remain less than impressed with these crocodile
tears. Justina Pelletier had two parents as well as respectable aunts,
uncles, granparents and grown siblings. As long as The State can steal
a child such as that from so many loving family members no child is
ever safe in this warped and callous nation!!! We should hold these
things to be self evident -- that children belong with their families.
One parent may be unfit but there are other family. Children do not
spring onto this earth from a vacuum. They have a history. They have a
legacy. They have a family! They DO NOT belong to The State.</p>
