Dear Ann,

Our national monuments belong to every American. They span our nation, from rugged mountain peaks, through pristine forests, across vast, rich deserts rich in wildlife, and oceans painted with a spectrum of underwater life.

These lands and waters are as much of a part
of our nation's fabric as the great halls of Congress.

Currently, 27 national monuments—including the newly designated Bear's Ears National Monument in Utah, and California's Giant Sequoia National Monument—are up for review under an executive order from President Trump.

In addition to examining their continued designation as national monuments,
the review will also take into consideration whether these precious protected areas can be exploited for activities such as drilling, logging, and mining.

To date, no president in our nation’s history has rescinded a national monument designation. This unprecedented action would not only degrade lands cherished by generations of North Americans, but for the wildlife
that calls them home as well.

Many of our national monuments have earned their designation due to their irreplaceable, unique nature.

To open these lands up for exploitation could spell disaster for countless species such as the endangered kit fox and California condor that depend on them for their continued survival.

At this critical moment in the history of our nation’s national monuments,
we should continue the protection of the lands under review, and reject any changes to their current levels of protection.

These lands and waters represent so much more than wildlife habitat: They provide clean air, recreational areas for hunting, hiking, and fishing, and economic benefits for neighboring communities. They are a vital link to the foundation of our nation that existed
long before the drafting of the Constitution.

Sincerely,
