I spoke with Kelly O'Brien about our much beloved, but deeply troubled local public radio station today. She's the former president of the former public radio station, KUSP in Santa Cruz. She's also an MBA from Arizona State University.

KUSP had a $1.1 million operating budget four years ago. Last December they surrendered their FCC license to a Christian broadcasting outfit. O'Brien cited two causes; (1) competition from CSUMB sponsored public radio station, KAZU, and; (2) an aging listenership that NPR just didn't serve anymore. They tried a Triple A format toward the end with good results, but it was too late. KUSP's biggest creditor triggered the collapse -- NPR.

I sent O'Brien the latest Form 990s and audit from KZYX. Along with the bylaws and minutes for the same time period. This is what she told me, word-for-word:

I continue to believe that to have a successful future KZYX needs more
community program hosts: more local topics. Not more of the same
I totally agree, Norman.
