I would urge anyone who feels strongly about this policy to keep volunteers off the radio and out of the station due to unstated preferences of the Program Director, should speak up at the July 7th Board meeting in Willits.<br> As Jeanine Pfeiffer said at the Oct. 2013 meeting in Boonville, programmers need clear guidelines to know what is and isn't permissible and some discussion of the reason behind the policy. <br> There needs to be a written policy--something that was favored by Bob Bushansky of the CAB.<br> When I spoke about how decisions are made about volunteers who were volunteering in lieu of membership dues at the Annual Membership meeting--without input from the person who is being prevented from volunteering, I was challenging the fairness of the decision makers and the process.<br> This issue pertains to both programmers and non programming volunteers. It is crucial to reach a fair agreement to keep ' bad blood' from infecting the community collaboration that is vital to a public radio station.<br> I want to move on as well but something as important as this isn't right until the collective 'you' makes it right.<br> To quote the last line of the letter I presented to the full Board on May 6th--"This is a dark area that needs exposure to the light of a full transparent discussion to prevent the abuse and misuse by management & staff of anyone who opposes this tactic ( banning) as an authoritarian, intolerant approach to a different perspective."<br> I have chosen to not make my letter public until the issue is aired at the July meeting as I wish to settle this internally -- something I have been attempting to do for over a year.<br> Sheila Dawn<br><br>doug mckenty <dougmck@gmail.com> wrote:<br><br>This is unfortunate, especially in light of the new Board 's perception that KZYX needs more volunteers helping with the programming, not less. <div><br></div><div>What does it mean to be "critical" of a radio station whose governance is democratic and whose mission statement requires acceptance of "all points of view"?</div>
<div><br></div><div>We can speculate that setting up the list serve to perform a function currently not allowed on the airwaves nor provided for on the stations own web sight, is the reason for the dismissal. </div><div>
<br></div><div>As I recall, the only issue discussed by Norman so far on the list serve has been the one about the contract that is supposed to be signed by programmers with MCPB as stipulated in the Station Handbook. I believe Norman's concern was that without this contract, programmers are legally treated as employees of the station (though unpaid) rather than independant contractors, and are subject to CA state liability requirements as a result. I have wondered how this contract (or lack thereof) affects a programmers ownership of his/her program including subsequent syndication rights. </div>
<div><br></div><div>I believe Mary and Barry Vogel had a dispute about this when Barry was in the process of syndicating "Radio Curious," which can be heard on KMUD as well as KZYX. I do not know how Barry resolved the issue. </div>
<div><br></div><div>Is it possible that bringing this up qualifies as "criticism" of KZYX and was the cause of the dismissal? It seems to me like something that needs to be looked into, not a criticism of station policy.</div>
<div><br></div><div>My feeling has been that Norman has been a good moderator, remaining neutral as the debate raged on. </div><div><br></div><div>I for one would like to hear Norman's voice back on the air, and hope that the new board will be able to resolve this quickly as it now appears that more bad press is coming out right in the middle of a pledge drive right after the board let us know we will be losing up to $75k in public support next fiscal year. The drama continues.</div>
