who approves all the herbicides, and the member of OU that had studied
MRC's 50-year plan, Peter Good. At that time, the 50-yr plan was up
for public comment, and that was the cause of convening this forum.
In spite of advertizing, posters, a convienient weekend time, and lots of

the forest had been mismanaged and clear cut by the previous owner.
Since that time, it has grown back with a lot of tan oaks. They
can't use tan oaks and need to remove them in order to grow a monoculture
of the trees they plan to harvest in 50 years. This is an investment
that they will not reap the profits for several decades. <br><br>We asked why not just cut down the trees they don't want on their
privately held land instead of hack and squirt? Their reply never
even mentioned money. They explained that most of these trees can
only be reached by foot. If they were cut down or removed by the
roots, they would need to pave roads all over the forest for their heavy
equipment, and that would damage the forest worse. They said that
they constantly monitor the water in the streams and find NO RESIDUE from
their herbicide. <br><br>Once resident of Comptche at the forum
said his orchard was destroyed by their spraying. The rep from MRC
replied that they are very sorry for that. It was clearly a
mistake. They have revised their policies to never spray that close
to the edge of their property anymore. <br><br>Chuck Morse, the
Ag. Commissioner (not an elected post), himself an organic farmer, stated
that he approved their use of Garlon. He stated that it was not his
job to compare the herbicides with the Prop 65 list of carcinogenic
chemicals. <br><br>I thought we did a fabulous job on that
forum. Too bad only about 6 people came from the public. Now,
2 years later, the issue has come to the forefront. But MRC's 50-yr
plan was approved almost 2 years ago. I think it would be more
effective to complain to Chuck Morse's boss rather than to MRC.
Chuck Morse, the government representative who approves the use of Roundup
and Garlon is the one you should be targeting more than MRC, which already
locked in their 50-yr plan. <br><br>I personally find that Tan
Oaks provide some of the biggest and sweetest acorns. Considering
the abundance of oak trees in Mendocino County, the popularity of
gluten-free food, and the nutritional value of the acorn, I think the tan
oaks are a rich resource for the acorn flour industry. I see acorn
flour and wool as the 2 biggest sustainable employment opportunities that
we have to develop in the County, but so far, no one has taken up the
project. I imagine crowds of youths collecting acorns in the many
forests and bringing them back to local processing facilities where they
are peeled, ground, and leeched of tannin, then ground into flour,
packaged and distributed for sale. I dream of visiting an acorn
flour factory in South Korea where they provide acorn flour for the world
commercial markets. Why just South Korea? Why not Mendocino
County also. Therefore, it breaks my heart to see them killing the tan
oaks. <br><br>Please understand that I am not justifying the use
of herbicide. I just want to share the information of those who have
worked on this issue before you. <br><br>I also heard a report
from the Mendocino Environmental Center who had joined your last meeting
about this issue that they had done a great deal of work on this issue
already, and felt unheard and unwelcome at the meeting. They went to
collaborate, but the locals at the meeting seemed to ignore what has come
