The attached article reminded me of an
issue that we...well, some of us...could work on, although in a
sector of the economy that is notoriously complicated in the
County. Nonetheless, if we want to keep big tobacco out of the
County when marijuana is eventually regulated, then we probably
have until the November, 2016, election to pass an initiative to
do so.

There will probably be a state-wide initiative to legalize
('regulate and tax' is the preferable term) marijuana in either
the California Primary (June 7) or General Election (November 8)
of 2016. Whichever date it is, that might be the best time to
also have on the Mendocino County ballot an initiative to protect
part of the local economy by banning corporate growing of
marijuana in the County.

Is anyone else interested in such a campaign?
PS: Full disclosure: I don't have a dog in this fight, i.e.
marijuana. Don't grow; don't smoke; don't eat. But if the
"Mendo" brand is ever going to be reserved for the benefit of
small-scale growers like we already have, and not become just
another appellation for corporate advertising, such an initiative
to ban corporate growing in the County seems like a necessity to
me. I do care about the local economy.
