This is happening right now in California. Check out the video. These waste ponds have washed away and into rivers creeks and all water systems during storms, its easy to see why. During superstorm Sandy and in the Colorado floods, thousands of these open air ponds washed away into farmlands and water.
Note that these are unlined, evaporation/percolation ponds taking huge amounts of oil and gas waste water likely from fracked and unfracked wells without any oversight. We visited this site as part of our tour with the State and CV Regional Water Boards on Thursday. They say they are phasing these types of ponds out, but these ones have been operating for so long, they may be grandfathered in. Need to find what if any permits were granted. We need to show that they threaten water quality in order to get the CV Board to shut them down if they already have a discharge permit.
